Who doesn’t love an Instagrammable cocktail to show off on social media?
To mark the release of the Pixel 3 smartphone, Google conducted a study with a team of
social media experts, researching what the most Instagrammable cocktail is.
They analysed the 10,000 most engaging UK Instagram posts that featured the hashtag ‘cocktail’ over the
What did they find?
The team found that the hashtags ‘pink’, ‘neon’, ‘glutenfree’ and ‘vegan’ were the most
popular attached to posts of cocktails when being shared on social media. Ingredients such
as lemon, elderflower and smoke were also found to be the most popular.
Also, results found that 43% of posts were tagged with hashtag ‘gin’ compared to any other
Armed with these findings, mixologist Matt Hollidge was brought in and given the task to
create the UK’s most shareable and Instagrammable cocktail.
“Nowadays people don’t just want cocktails to taste good, they want them to be something
they can share – which makes my job of creating them even more fun,” said Hollidge.
“It’s all about what you can capture on your phone and show your mates, so using Pixel 3 as
inspiration was really interesting. I loved the challenge of incorporating different features of
the phone into the design, particularly the wellness colour-change elements. As well as
making the final cocktail as photogenic as possible.”
The cocktail, called ‘The Not Pink Drink’, was made with a blend of 50ml gin or Seedlip Spice,
20ml elderflower liqueur or elderflower cordial, 1tbsp butterfly pea flowers, juice of half a
lemon, a dash of orange blossom water and 100ml Indian tonic water.
It was garnished with a wide-angle selfie skewer and adorned with pink macaroons and
viola petals. For some unusual extras, to achieve an even more Instragrammable cocktail,
the use of a night sight UV light could be used, with 14% of posts used the hashtag ‘neon’, to
make the tonic water glow when placed under ultra violet.
